The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
